Combination of Quercetin and Vitamin E Supplementation Promotes Yolk Precursor Synthesis and Follicle Development in Aging Breeder Hens via Liver–Blood–Ovary Signal Axis

Abstract: The fertility of female animals is negatively correlated with increasing chronological age. In aging broiler breeder hens, there is a decline in the functionality of the ovary and liver accompanied by hormonal or endocrine changes, a reduction in antioxidant capacity, and a decrease in folliculogenesis. Therefore, improving the reproductive function in aging breeder hens using dietary strategies is of great concern to the poultry breeder. This study evaluated the capacity of dietary quercetin (Q), vitamin E (V… Show more

“…It has been well documented that flavonoids, including quercetin (a phytoestrogenic compound) exert agonistic and antagonistic effects depending on the intrinsic estrogen concentration ( Cassidy, 2003 ; Yang and Chaudhry, 2018 ; Amevor et al., 2021 ). This is because estradiol ( E 2 ) actively facilitates the production and function of other reproductive hormones, including follicle stimulating hormone ( FSH ) in sexually mature hens ( Liu et al., 2018 ; Cui et al., 2020 ).…”

“…The diets were formulated to meet or exceed the National Research Council (1994) nutrient recommendations ( National Research Council, 1994 ). The composition and nutritional values of the basal diet for the experiment have been reported ( Amevor et al., 2021 ). The experiment lasted for 10 wk, and throughout the experiment, daily observations and measurements were taken on egg laying rate, feed intake, and weekly determination of egg quality.…”

“…Quercetin and catechin combination was reported as a potential therapy for alleviating excessive adipose tissue inflammation, improving metabolic parameters related to insulin sensitivity, and regulating cell redox status to exert anti-inflammatory actions [196]. In addition, quercetin elicited synergistic roles together with vitamin E to promote anti-inflammation, anti-apoptosis, and immunity in aged hens [197,198].…”

“…Therefore, a rapid development of dietary supplements to improve gut function and homeostasis in aged animals is imminent ( 25 , 26 ). Vitamin E (VE) is a powerful dietary supplement characterized with a strong antioxidant property that attenuates the production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to prevent tissue damage caused by oxidative stress in chickens ( 27 , 28 ). It is involved in muscular activity, tissue integrity and immune response by hindering the production of reactive oxygen species ( 29 – 33 ).…”

“…Dietary flavonoids such as catechin, resveratrol, rutin, and quercetin (Q) are polyphenolic compounds which are universally present in plants, and play major roles in chicken performance ( 40 42 ). Quercetin is a polyphenol belonging to the class of flavonoids obtained from fruits, vegetables, and beverages ( 27 , 43 ). It is a potent antioxidant that enhances intestinal barrier function.…”
