Combination of strontium chloride and photobiomodulation in the control of tooth sensitivity post-bleaching: A split-mouth randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Objective This split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial assessed the effect of 10% strontium chloride in combination with photobiomodulation (PBM) for the control of tooth sensitivity (TS) post-bleaching. Methods The upper/lower, right and left quadrants of fifty volunteers were randomized and allocated to four groups (n = 25): PLACEBO—placebo gel + simulation of PBM; Placebo + PBM; STRONTIUM—10% strontium chloride + simulation of PBM; and PBM + STRONTIUM—10% strontium chloride + PBM. All groups rece… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the study revealed the rather promising effect of potassium nitrate or PBMT alone. Similar results were found by Pompeu et al ( 2021 ) when combining 10% strontium chloride with PBMT, which was effective in reducing post‐whitening TS, but not significantly different from using PBMT or strontium chloride alone. In this study, combining PBMT with CPP‐ACPF proved more effective in reducing pain in the second and third weeks of evaluation than using PBMT or CPP‐ACPF alone.…”

“…According to Sharma et al ( 2005 ) the CIEDE2000 formula is most compatible with visual perception and acceptance of color change because shade measurements are fitted to three parameters: lightness, hue and chroma. Although, the advantages of CIEDE2000, the CIELab color space system remains commonly used to measure changes in shade during TW clinical trials (de Paula et al, 2019 ; Pompeu et al, 2021 ). Therefore, using the CIELab color space system enables to compare data between different clinical trials and may help to improve the scientific evidence.…”

“…Its mechanism of action is based on the production capacity of free radicals by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that oxidizes the pigmented organic molecules of the tooth structure. Thus, its low molecular weight causes its diffusion in the interprismatic spaces of enamel to occur rapidly, reaching the pulp chamber and producing oxidative stress in the cells present there that release in ammatory mediators with consequent sensitization of noceptors, causing the most common adverse effect in bleaching treatments, dentin hypersensitivity 12 .…”

“…Strontium chloride (SrCl 2 ), usually at a concentration of 10%, operates in a manner reminiscent of calcium within the human body [93]. It has the potential to act as a substitute for apatite biomineralization, as has been described in previous reports [94].…”
