Combinational Chemotherapy and Photothermal Therapy Using a Gold Nanorod Platform for Cancer Treatment

Abstract: Multimodal approaches combined with various nanomaterials and advanced techniques have been developed for synergistic cancer treatment. Among various therapies, conventional chemotherapy (CHT) is a direct cancer treatment that can produce unintended side effects due to nonspecific action on both the tumor and normal cells; patient‐friendly photothermal therapy (PTT) may be able to treat embedded tumors in vital regions with minimal invasion but does not guarantee complete removal of cancers. However, the combi… Show more

“…The generated heat can provide photothermal therapy for cancer treatment and/or trigger anti-cancer drug release for chemotherapy when gold nanorods serve as a drug carrier [ 46 ]. In short, gold nanorods can be applied for cancer treatment in phototherapy, cellular imaging, drug transport, and combined therapy (e.g., phototherapy and chemotherapy) [ 47 , 48 ].…”

“…The implementation of these GNPs in combating cancer could be demonstrated through their photothermal capability. Various review articles have comprehensively detailed the concept, applications, safety, heating and cells-death mechanisms, synthesis and morphology, in vitro and in vivo efficacy, and physicochemical properties of these therapies (120)(121)(122)(123)(124)(125)(126)(127). However, the basic principles of this approach are summarized and illustrated in this section to provide the reader with brief outlines of this potential field.…”
