Combinatorial Optimization of (YxLu1−xy)3Al5O12:Ce3y Green-Yellow Phosphors

Abstract: A combinatorial chemistry method was used to synthesize and screen (Y(x)Lu(1-x-y))(3)Al(5)O(12):Ce(3y) green-yellow phosphors. The material libraries were obtained using an inkjet delivery system and screened for their fluorescence under an ultraviolet light of 365 nm. The optimized composition was identified to be (Y(0.2)Lu(0.788))(3)Al(5)O(12):Ce(3+)(0.036). Scale-up experiments confirmed that the optimized composition of the phosphor showed the highest luminescence intensity and an excellent scintillation p… Show more

“…13À16 Recently, Sohn et al 17 employed solid-state combinatorial chemistry to synthesize AE 2 Si 5 N 8 /Eu 2þ (AE = alkaline earth elements) phosphors and analyze their composition. Liu et al 18 screened (Y x Lu 1ÀxÀy ) 3 -Al 5 O 12 /Ce 3y greenÀyellow phosphors using the same method (combi-chem). Figure 2A schematically depicts the developed drop-on-demand inkjet delivery system.…”

“…Other later examples of this approach include creating libraries of powder phosphors, 12 growth factors, 13 liquid crystal mixtures, 14 mixed oxides 15 and polymer:fullerene blends. 16 RIJ can be seen to have evolved from this combinatorial approach, whereby a chemical or physical reaction occurs on the surface of the substrate between the material being printed and the substrate, which may itself have been modified, or between the printed materials themselves.…”

“…Instrumentation in this instance has to be more sophisticated than the single-printhead inkjet printer. The majority of research groups in this area to date work with the piezoelectric-driven Autodrop system (Microdrop Technologies) as this can be fitted with multiple print-heads to facilitate RIJ, 12,26,27 or with MicroFab's JetLab system. 5 Affordable but considerably less sophisticated standard desktop colour printers (such as HP, Epson and Lexmark) and modified versions thereof have also been successfully used for Full RIJ.…”

“…Thus, the repeatability of peak positions is very important here. Furthermore, the fluorescence could be influenced by a wide range of different factors including, the concentration of analyte and other substances , the nature of the solvent , temperature , pH or the presence of quenchers .…”
