Combined dietary supplementation of long chain inulin and Lactobacillus acidophilus W37 supports oral vaccination efficacy against Salmonella Typhimurium in piglets

Abstract: Routine use of antibiotics in livestock animals strongly contributed to the creation of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strains (STM). Vaccination is an alternative to the use of antibiotics but often suffers from low efficacy. The present study investigated whether long-chain inulin (lcITF) and Lactobacillus acidophilus W37 (LaW37) can support vaccination efficacy against STM and if the interventions influence possible gut microbiota changes. Piglets received daily supplementation until sacrifice. … Show more

“…plantarum could reduce inflammatory markers such as IFN-α, IFN-β, and IL-6 and block virus replication by interaction with SARS-CoV-2 helicase ( 104 ). L. acidophilus W37 (LaW37) with long-chain inulin (lcITF) was also used as a probiotic in a study on piglets and increased two-folded vaccine efficacy against Salmonella Typhimurium strains (STM) ( 105 ).…”

“…A similar study showed increase Salmonella translocation with FOS and lactulose in rats (Bovee-Oudenhoven, 2003;Ten Bruggencate et al, 2003). A more recent study showed improved effects of fructo-oligosaccharides on piglet health against Salmonella infection (Lepine et al, 2019). In a guinea pig model for Listeria infection, other prebiotics had a similar effect (Ebersbach et al, 2010).…”

“…The revised definition instead focused on the concept of ecological and functional characteristics of the microbiota to be relevant for host physiology, such as ecosystem diversity, and the support of broad microbial consortia. Many studies focusing on prebiotics such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, and mannanoligosaccharides, proved the link between prebiotics consumption and restoring intestinal balance (184)(185)(186)(187). Additionally, regardless of bacterial fermentation, prebiotic oligosaccharides (such as fructooligosaccharides and galactooligosaccharides) were shown to exert an anti-inflammatory effect or have an anti-adhesive activity to inhibit binding pathogens (188,189).…”
