Combined effects of hyperthermia and chemotherapy on the regulate autophagy of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells under a hypoxic microenvironment

Abstract: Autophagy has a complex dual role in tumor survival or cell death owning to that is an evolutionarily conserved catabolic mechanism and provides the cells with a sustainable source of biomolecules and energy for the maintenance of homeostasis under stressful conditions such as tumor microenvironment. Hyperthermia is a rapidly growing field in cancer therapy and many advances have been made in understanding and applying the mechanisms of hyperthermia. The shallow oral and maxillofacial position and its abundant… Show more

“…Admittedly, these findings are in disconcordance with previous studies in UBC showing decreased beclin expression in tumor tissue [32,33]. But in parallel, reports in other solid tumors have shown elevated expression of beclin to be associated with tumor progression [34][35][36].…”

“…92 Taking the wellstudied Pt nanoparticles as an example, the electrocatalytic mechanism is mainly based on the Faraday cage effect of Pt nanoparticles under the action of external electric field. The adsorption of H 2 O and Cl À on the surface of Pt (111) drives the effective breaking of the H-O bond, catalyzing H 2 O electrolysis into toxic OH. 93,94 However, electrolysis cell-based electrocatalysis is highly reliant on an external power supply, which restricts its applications in deep and dispersive tumors.…”

“…Hypoxia and starvation caused by hyperthermia could increase the autophagy flux. Interestingly, the inhibition of autophagy in such situations could attenuate cell migration and strengthen hyperthermia-induced apoptosis in OSCC cells ( Shi F. et al, 2021 ). Damage factors such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) can slow down cancer progression.…”
