“…SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, T-AOC, and MDA are important indicators of antioxidant function. SOD and CAT are able to scavenge free radicals to reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress to the intestinal mucosa, which plays an important role in intestinal defense and repair ( 19 ); GSH-Px mirrors the body’s ability to scavenge free radicals, which protects the animal from damage caused by lipid peroxides ( 20 ); T-AOC is a comprehensive indicator of antioxidant function, reflecting the ability to compensate for external stimuli and the state of free radical metabolism ( 19 ); and MDA content represents the degree of lipid peroxidation and indirectly the degree of cellular damage ( 21 ). The present study showed that the SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and T-AOC activities in wild M. albus were significantly higher, while the MDA level was significantly lower compared with the cultured ones, indicating that the antioxidant capacity of wild M. albus is stronger than that of cultured M. albus .…”

“…The structural integrity of the intestinal epithelial cells is critical for the maintenance of intestinal barrier function, which can be affected by various exogenous factors . The abrasion of intestinal villi cells was observed in fish exposed to individual PSNP treatment . Some studies have already reported that enterocyte sloughing, cellular infiltration, submucosal edema, and abrasion of the intestinal villi became more severe after exposure to DEHP. , MUC1 and MUC2 are intestinal-type mucins that play vital roles in the maintenance of intestinal epithelial barrier function.…”

“…In fact, although with some conflicting results (Lin et al, 2023), this condition has been reported to exert a greater toxic action on the reproductive capacity of zebrafish increasing the GSI, inhibiting spermatogenesis, oocyte development, destroying hormonal homeostasis and causing a reduction in the number and quality of eggs (Amereh et al, 2020). Additionally, also the combined impact of NPs and other endocrine disruptors, for example, bisphenols, for which some preliminary data support a significantly increased uptake and some possible exacerbated eco-toxicological effects in case of co-exposure, need to be deeply addressed (Chen et al 2017; Zheng et al 2023). Nanoscale-plastics can affect the zebrafish development through maternal transfer of NPs to the offsprings (Pitt et al, 2018), supporting the need for future investigation specifically focused on transgenerational effects.…”
