Preoperative and postoperative management, including calcium and Vitamin D supplementation, is paramount. Measurement of parathyroid hormone levels after surgery is the best predictor of hypoparathyroidism. This guideline offers recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of acute hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery.
