Combined Method for Evaluating Accessibility in Serious Games

Abstract: Nowadays, one of the learning resources in the educational area are serious games, also called training games; they are games designed with a different purpose than fun, whose main objective is to reinforce the new concepts more creatively. However, not all existing serious games are accessible in a way that allows access to a more significant number of users. Therefore, this research proposes to apply a combined method to evaluate accessibility in serious games, considering the Web Content Accessibility Guide… Show more

“…The results of this study reveal that to achieve adequate accessibility in mobile applications, it is essential to apply WCAG 2.1 according to studies [22,28,29]. In order to (1) improve text contrast, the text and the background must not share the same chromatic range; (2) correct legibility by matching the text with a light contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 concerning the background; (3) apply an appropriate simple Sans Serif typeface; (4) use headings and descriptions to make known what users cannot otherwise understand or see; (5) clearly define visual content; (6) provide options to customize the application to facilitate navigation; (7) involve a simple design process by eliminating any superfluous information.…”

“…It should be noted that manual testing cannot be replaced, especially when it comes to accessibility, as it may be essential to test with end-users with disabilities. Accessibility validation was performed using guidelines based on Section 508 and WCAG 2.1; some phases of this methodology ( Salvador-Ullauri et al, 2020 ) were tested in previous works of the authors related to serious games; the methodology for evaluating e-commerce websites is summarized in eight phases, as shown in Fig. 2 .…”

“…According to Salvador-Ullauri et al (2020) , in this phase, we involved three web accessibility experts with experience in the area since 2015, who have more than 10 scientific publications in web accessibility evaluations, serious games, and accessible mobile applications. Discrepancies found in the automatic review of e-commerce sites were resolved in consensus.…”

“…The proposed approach can be replicated for people with other disabilities and can be used throughout the game to create a cycle to guarantee more inclusive and accessible applications. A second study [37] proposes to apply a combined method to evaluate accessibility in serious games, taking into account the WCAG 2.1. As a case study, the accessibility of 82 serious games developed by Physical Education Technology Interactive Simulations at the University of Colorado was evaluated.…”
