Combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring assists the diagnosis of sliding hiatal hernia in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease

Abstract: Ratio of reflux episodes detected by pH-probe to that by impedance probes >1 demonstrated by MII-pH study is a good screening test of sliding hiatal hernia in GERD children.

“…Impedance and pH data were stored in a digital data-logger (Ohmega, MMS, Enschede, The Netherlands) using a simple frequency of 50 and 1 Hz, respectively. 7 An acid reflux was defined as a drop in intraesophageal pH 4 for 5 seconds or more. DeMeester score was calculated.…”

“…The added stability of carbon nanotubes can enable in-situ monitoring in other medical and environmental applications. For example, monitoring gastrointestinal reflux where the sensor can be exposed to extreme acidic conditions4647. The incorporation of miniature CNT-based sensors onto remote controlled platforms could enable remote sensing of hard to access or hazardous environments while the low power requirement of these devices is conducive to wireless operation.…”

“…There is increasing evidence supporting the clinical utility of impedance signals in the data interpretation of multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring in children. [18][19][20][21][22] However, the majority of these studies focused on the utility in diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux signals, instead of bolus transit. [18][19][20][21][22] Impedance signals were shown to be effective in assessing bolus transit during swallow studies in humans, but the majority of HRIM studies depended on the visual interpretation of physicians.…”

[5][6][7][8][9][10]23 The presence of impaired bolus transit is associated with persistent low impedance after esophageal contraction of each swallow event, which may be indicated by larger EII and smaller DCIIR in our calculation.…”
