Combined Oral Contraceptive Effects on Low-Grade Chronic Inflammatory Mediators in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with dyslipidemia, dysglycemia, metabolic syndrome, and low-grade chronic inflammation, which increase the risks for cardiovascular disease. Combined oral contraceptives may affect the mediators of low-grade chronic inflammation with potential additive risk in PCOS patients. This meta-analysis investigates the impact of oral contraceptive on markers of chronic inflammation in PCOS patients. Pubmed, Scopus, and Cochrane database were used to search studies reporting on th… Show more

“…It is therefore possible that use of OCP could increase the risk of positive thyroid antibodies, but a previous Danish study did not support this hypothesis (30). Use of OCP can induce metabolic side effects in PCOS including increased insulin levels during OGTT (31, 32), increased inflammatory activity with higher levels of C-reactive protein (33), and weight gain (34). Activation of the inflammatory system could increase the risk of autoimmune thyroiditis (35).…”

“…Presently, limited research assessed oxidative stress [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ] and low-grade inflammatory status [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ] in pre-menopausal women OC-users, two conditions that have been independently implicated in several pathologies, including CVDs and cancer. Rather surprisingly no study examined the relationship between oxidative stress and low-grade inflammatory status in a sample of childbearing age women according to OC use.…”
