Combined photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography using a single near-infrared supercontinuum laser source

Abstract: We developed an integrated dual-modal photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography (PA-OCT) system using a single near-infrared supercontinuum laser source to simultaneously provide both optical absorption and scattering contrasts. A pulsed broadband supercontinuum source was generated by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser and a photonic-crystal fiber. When we imaged two colored hairs, the black hair was visible in both PA and OCT images, whereas the white hair was only mapped in the OCT image. The single laser source wi… Show more

“…Several different implementations of OCT/PAM dual-modality imaging system have been introduced since 2009, including an SD OCT system combined with a transmission mode OR-PAM system, 229 an SD OCT system combined with a laser scanning optical resolution PAM (LSOR-PAM) system, 230 and a dual-modality system in which OCT and PAM use the same NIR supercontinuum laser source 231 or the same visible laser source. 232 Two representative designs are given in Figs.…”

“…1. Although photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) and photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE) have been combined with OCT already [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16], they either suffer from the shallow penetration depth of the optical resolution PAM (OR-PAM) systems or are still in the initial prototype stage with some fundamental challenges to tackle. Combining PAT and OCT, especially using the optical detection PAT, enables large field of view (FOV), whole-body imaging with centimeter level penetration depth achievable by PAT.…”

“…Thus, there is great interest among researchers in biomedical study to integrate di®erent imaging methods with the PAI system. [19][20][21][22][23][24] PA multi-modal imaging technology integrated with OCT, ultrasound imaging and°uorescence have been reported in the literature. [25][26][27] PA multi-modal imaging can simultaneously obtain parameters, such as absorption and scattering of biological tissue, which can provide powerful technical means for modern precision medical diagnosis.…”
