“…Observation alone, particularly if the patient is given adequate assurance and psychological support, may be the management of choice in many instances. Oral vitamin E therapy has many enthusiastic adherents, some of whom recommend a combination of this with other modalities, particularly with radiation therapy (14–17). The rationale for vitamin E therapy is not entirely clear, but it is easily administered and apparently not toxic in the dosages recommended, i.e., 300 mg of alpha‐tocopherol daily for several months (18).…”

“…Since inflammatory infiltrates and fibroblastic proliferation are known to resolve readily with small exposures to ionizing radiation in such lesions as fresh keloids, pterygia, corneal injury, or incipient suppuration, it is quite conceivable that resolution may be encouraged by similar treatment in Peyronie's disease. Small‐dose irradiation may encourage and hasten regression (1, 3, 14–17). Such irradiation is not likely to be harmful, and seems most likely to be beneficial.…”

“…There are few vessels and many spindle-like cells, but compact bundles of connective tissue compose the chief architecture (Burford and Burford, 1957). The condition is in some ways similar to Dupuytren's contracture since both are chronic sclerosing lesions of fascia tending to recur after surgical excision.…”

“…The role of trauma as a predisposing factor is uncertain. In a review of 186 cases of Peyronie's disease, Burford and Burford (1957) found a definite history of trauma in 61 cases (33 per cent), while Waller and Dreese (1952) stated that trauma could be implicated as an aetiological factor in about half of their cases. In view of these findings it is, therefore, difficult to exclude the possibility of the case under discussion being one of Peyronie's disease in spite of the definite history of trauma.…”

“…Ultraviolet light therapy was another trial in the treatment of the plaques in 1957. However, such therapy never gained popularity and had very limited success (46). In contrast, ultrasonographic treatment has gained some popularity with the addition of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.…”
