Combined transarterial chemoembolization and arterial administration ofBletilla striatain treatment of liver tumor in rats

Abstract: AIM:To evaluate and compare the effect of combined transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and arterial administration of Bletilla striata (a Chinese traditional medicine against liver tumor) versus TACE alone for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in ACI rats.

“…Today BsP is widely used in clinics and is administered through routes including external and internal application and arterial embolization, and there have been no reports of adverse reactions or toxicity. 6 Although the safety of BsP has not been explicitly tested in the past, our previous cytotoxicity and ocular irritation tests demonstrated that BsP is safe to use as a method of ophthalmic topical drug delivery.…”

“…BS angioembolus was used as an embolic material in intra-arterial hepatic chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatic cell carcinoma (HCC) (Zheng et al, 1998). The mechanisms of embolization by BS can be attributed to the following factors (Qian et al, 2003): non-absorbent property, total mechanical obstruction, the inhibition on angiogenesis and secondary obstruction due to injury of the wall of blood vessels. In addition BS could short prothrombin time (PT) and decrease activated partial thromboplastin time, and the degree of PT reduction was dependent on the composition ratio of polysaccharides from BS (Sun et al, 2006).…”

“…is a terrestrial orchid that is native to eastern Asian countries. It has been used as a traditional medicine for treating various symptoms and conditions, including tuberculosis, hemoptysis, and gastric ulcer (Kong et al 2003;Qian et al 2003).A variety of compounds, such as the phenanthrene derivatives reported by Yamaki et al (1993), has been isolated from this species. It can be reproduced easily by seed germination, which characterizes it among many ornamental species of Orchidaceae (Nagashima 1982;1994).…”
