Combining ability for yield and fruit quality in the pepper Capsicum annuum

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of the general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA, respectively) of 15 characteristics and to evaluate the most promising crosses and the reciprocal effect between the hybrids of six parents of the Capsicum annuum species. Six parents, belonging to the Horticultural Germplasm Bank of Centro de Ciências Agrárias of Universidade Federal da Paraíba, were crossed in complete diallel manner. The 30 hybrids generated and the parents were t… Show more

“…In addition, we found significant reciprocal effects for all studied characters. According to by Rêgo et al (2009) and Nascimento et al (2014), in the traits where non-additive variances were important (germination percentage, deformed seedlings percentage, root number, hypocotyl length, hypocotyl width, definitive leaf number, leaf length and leaf width), there was an additional opportunity for developing F 1 hybrid.…”

“…Diallelic crosses has been more used to study genetic control of morphological and agronomical traits but not to in vitro plant development for chili peppers (Rêgo et al, 2009;Schuelter et al, 2010;Nascimento et al, 2014). In a previous study, Rêgo et al (2015b) and Medeiros et al (2015) analyzed the germination percentage inheritance and plantlet development by Hayman's diallelic analysis.…”

“…Even though increase in cultivation and commercialization of hot pepper in the last few years (Nascimento et al, 2014) there is increasing demand in India for new cultivars that have higher yield, quality, pest and disease resistance, all of which can be achieved through breeding programmes.…”

“…It gives additional information on presence or absence of epistasis, average degree of dominance and distribution of dominant and recessive genes in the parents (Rego et al, 2011;Nascimento et al, 2014). Application of diallel techniques to selfpollinated crops for improving yield and quality may be appropriate (Griffing, 1956).…”
