Combining ability of non‐adapted sources for male‐fertility restoration in Pampa CMS of hybrid rye*

Abstract: Hybrid rye breeding and seed production relies on the cytoplasmic male sterility-inducing Pampa (P)-Cytoplasm. High levels of restoration were recently found in non-adapted rye accessions from Argentina (Pico Gentario, Pastoreo Massaux) and Iran (IRAN IX). To analyse their relative superiority, five seed-parent lines in P cytoplasm were crossed with five inbred lines of these sources and four adapted restorer lines. The 45 F 1 hybrids were tested for male-fertility restoration in three locations. Significant (… Show more

“…More recently hybrids are available with highly effective, environmentally stable restorer genes (Miedaner et al 2005). These genes were detected in a gene bank collection of primitive rye populations and transferred by backcrossing to the elite pollinator breeding materials.…”

“…H ybrid breeding is applied to improve the performance of crops. Hybrid breeding entails subdivision of the germplasm into at least two populations denoted as heterotic groups (Melchinger and Gumber, 1998). Genetic variation is generated in each breeding cycle within each heterotic group and progenies are evaluated for performance of testcrosses with testers from the opposite heterotic group (Hallauer and Miranda, 1988).…”

“…Hybrids with exotic restorer genes have been reported to be less prone to ergot contamination (Miedaner and Geiger ) and to be superior for pollen‐fertility restoration (Miedaner et al. ). The latter result fully agrees with this study, and the carriers of the exotic Rfp genes resulted in both experiments in high restorer indices of up to 90%.…”
