Combining B-mode ultrasound with pulsed wave Doppler for the assessment of tubal patency

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine whether the additional use of pulsed wave Doppler improves the diagnostic capacity in assessing tubal patency by hysterosalpingo contrast sonography (HyCoSy). A total of 210 women with a history of infertility were included in this study. HyCoSy was performed after intrauterine injection of Echovist 200. For the assessment of tubal patency B-mode scanning and pulsed wave Doppler ultrasound were performed in the proximal and distal tubal segments. With the combined sonograp… Show more

“…Seven studies had combined Doppler interrogation with gray scale sonography to improve the demonstration of the tube in cases of nonvisualization. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] We had great expectation that Doppler sonography and in particular power (energy) Doppler technique would be useful to assess the passage of air in the tubes. In practice, power Doppler sonography caused so many artifacts that identifica-tion of the tubes was more difficult.…”

“…Overall, 34 of these 145 cases (62 tubes) were verified using the gold standard laparoscopy and dye test. We defined the segment which was more than 3 cm distal from the uterus as the distal part of the Fallopian tube [20].…”

“…Because of the importance of cost‐effectiveness, diagnostic laparoscopy should be kept as a last step option. Radionuclide HSG, sonohysterography, and various ultrasonographic contrast media have been used as first‐line procedures to evaluate the fallopian tubes 6,7 . The cost‐effectiveness of these approaches is debatable.…”

Ultrasonography is a non-invasive procedure and provides both anatomical and physiological information for the assessment of a woman's fertility.…”
