“…More subtly, so is identifying compatible revenue streams through time, particularly for private landowners who must balance conservation and economic objectives (Holl & Howarth 2000;Schuyt et al 2007). Given the great extent of human-modified lands that are candidates for restoration (Hobbs and Harris 2001), prioritizing between alternative restoration pathways is key to focusing efforts (Johnston et al 2002;Macmillan et al 1998;Murdoch et al 2007;Naidoo et al 2006).…”

“…The sample size was not sufficient to estimate preferences for respondents from Quebec. Following the approach used by Opaluch et al (1993) and Johnston et al (2002) to examine variability of preferences across socioeconomic groups, a third model was estimated by interacting a dummy variable (0 or 1) representing state of residence with each of the explanatory attribute difference variables. The separate New York and Vermont models were developed to show the statistical significance of the attribute levels for each subpopulation; the model with state interaction evaluated whether the differences in the coefficients for New York and Vermont were statistically significant.…”

“…Although several previous studies utilizing choice experiments have included attributes associated with the natural environment, there are few choice experiment applications (e.g., Breffle and Rowe, 2002;Johnston et al, 2002;Carlsson et al, 2003;Xu et al, 2003) directly addressing ecosystem management. As demonstrated by the outcomes of this study, choice experiments can provide valuable and interesting insights into preferences for ecosystem management that would be difficult if not impossible to discern with more conventional survey methods.…”

“…Designs were developed with parameter priors derived from previous DCEs addressing similar types of ecological outcomes (e.g., Johnston et al 2002aJohnston et al ,b, 2011Johnston et al , 2012Johnston and Swallow 1999). Design efficiency was then reevaluated using alternative assumptions for preference parameters and utility structure.…”
