Combining surface textures and MXene coatings—towards enhanced wear-resistance and durability

Abstract: Surface texturing has gained significant attention over the last 30 years to tailor friction and wear under various tribological conditions in fundamental and applied tribological systems. Under dry conditions, surface textures help to improve friction or wear by reducing adhesion and the real area of contact as well as trapping wear particles. However, especially under high load conditions, surface textures rapidly wear away, thus losing their friction- and wear-reducing capability. A potential strategy to im… Show more

“…The tribological performance under dry conditions can be notably improved by the combined use of surface textures and solid lubricants, [8] which is also a promising avenue to be explored for MXenes. [138] Initial studies combining grooves [139] or bionic cross-like textures [140] and MXenes (ml-Ti 3 C 2 T x [139] and NbC 2 T x [140] ) have shown beneficial effects with potential for further improvements. However, the studied systems are rather complex and difficult to analyze due to the usage of MXenes, surface textures, and self-lubricating Sn-Ag-Cu alloys.…”

“…The other aspect is suppressing tool wear by introducing micro-nano textures on diamond cutting tool. The presence of surface micro-textures on diamond tool can produce predominant functionalities compared with untextured tools [82][83][84][85][86]. In the field of diamond cutting, the retention and accessibility of lubricant can be improved by the reasonable micro-texture design on diamond tool surface, thus reducing the machining force, the cutting temperature and the tool-chip interface friction [87].…”

“…On the other hand, orthodontic wax materials have been normally approved as extraordinary lubricants for minimising the friction forces of the archwire-bracket contact combinations in the clinical orthodontic treatment. Therefore, according to the various challenging and successful strategies of combining surface texturing and solid lubricants (e.g., coatings) for tailoring the friction and wear performance of the engineering surfaces, [45][46][47] the potential synergistic effects of the micro-grooves texture together with the orthodontic wax materials for obtaining a low friction coefficient and a low wear of the archwire-bracket sliding contacts in artificial saliva environment were further studied.…”
