Combustion Characteristics of Coal for Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) Blending with Steel Plant Flying Dust and Waste Oil Sludge

Abstract: Various characterization methods are used to investigate the physical and chemical properties of steel plant flying dust and waste oil sludge, and the combustion characteristics of the mixtures with pulverized coal are studied via thermogravimetric analysis; the catalytic combustion mechanism is also explored. The results show that two types of metallurgical by-products with small particle sizes and developed pores are evenly dispersed in the pulverized coal and are stably combined with it. The additives reduc… Show more

“…Increasing production efficiency is a very important issue in the energy sector because it is associated with fuel savings, as well as with reducing the amount of pollutants emitted per unit of generated energy. One possibility of increasing the energy efficiency of boilers is the use of modifiers (catalysts) that can be added to fuels [8]. They improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and speed of the combustion process, e.g., by burning heavier hydrocarbon fractions that are formed during fuel combustion and thus by reducing the loss of incomplete combustion.…”

“…The aspect that needs to be optimized is the appropriate amount of added catalyst. There are many limitations related to the selection of additives, e.g., the common problem of the high price of catalytic materials, as well as the fact that some of them cause corrosion or contaminate combustion products [8].…”

“…Many researchers dealt with coal char particles of different sizes in a series of experimental research. Different ignition temperature of char, ignition delay time, burning temperature, and burning time were investigated at different environment temperatures. Higuera calculated the combustion rate, resistance, and other parameters of a single coal char particle in O 2 and CO 2 .…”

“…The blends of coals and individual coals that were used were analysed for their chemical properties. Often coal blends are selected based on cost and availability, but for stable operation, it is common to make incremental changes to blends as opposed to macro changes [72]. Coal B was low-volatile bituminous coal and was a component of all the blends.…”
