Coming in handy: CeTI-Age — A comprehensive database of kinematic hand movements across the lifespan

Evelyn Muschter,
Jonas Schulz,
Máté Tömösközi
et al.

Abstract: The Tactile Internet aims to advance human-human and human-machine interactions that also utilize hand movements in real, digitized, and remote environments. Attention to elderly generations is necessary to make the Tactile Internet age inclusive. We present the first age-representative kinematic database consisting of various hand gesturing and grasping movements at individualized paces, thus capturing naturalistic movements. We make this comprehensive database of kinematic hand movements across the adult lif… Show more

“…We specifically targeted college students to obtain a sample with minimal age-related variability in movement patterns, which could potentially confound the investigation of specific kinematic features of interest. The sample age range is considered to represent a period of optimal kinematic efficiency in bodily movements among neurotypical individuals ( Hines Woollacott and Shumway-Cook, 1990 ; Honda et al, 2022 ; Muschter et al, 2023 ). The participants were recruited via course announcements, campus online listservs, and community flyers.…”

“…Possibilities to integrate touch into digital and communication technologies are presently being intensively researched and evaluated 16 , 18 , 19 . When these technologies are matured, they could provide new multisensory experiences for humans to perceive in virtual (or remote) environments through digitalized tactile and kinematic information 10 , 20 , besides visual and auditory signals.…”
