“…Social identity theory (Tajfel, 1969;Tajfel & Turner, 1986, 1979 has been used to investigate the sense-making processes and the understanding of individuals and groups, particularly in terms of how groups of people describe their in-group and out-group beliefs, behaviors, and understanding. Internal and external factors such as social class, place of origin, nationality, language, sexual orientation, status, religious practice, and belief (Dwertmann & Kunze, 2021;Erisen, 2017;Gibbs & Griffin, 2013;Mullin et al, 2018) are some of the elements that categorize people's backgrounds and identities (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). “…LGBTQ athletes in China also rarely come out publicly. So far, only one retired volleyball player has ever come out on social media; interestingly, the message was soon deleted ( Buzinski, 2021 ). Therefore, Chinese LGBTQ athletes cannot express themselves freely.…”

“…Historically, athletic departments as a whole have been unwilling to engage in meaningful discussion regarding sexual prejudice or LGBTQ+ inclusion; 13 however, the presence of supportive individuals, such as head or assistant coaches, can be an indicator to an LGBTQ+ athlete that an environment would be welcoming. 1315 Conversely, coaches who espouse negative attitudes may be less likely to help shape an inclusive climate for LGBTQ+ athletes and may instead encourage a more hostile environment on their teams. For example, lesbian and gay male athletes have reported a variety of discriminatory behaviors portrayed by coaches, including cutting players perceived to be lesbian, 3 harassing athletes, 16 or using denigrating language.…”
