Commentary: An updated agenda for the study of digital media use and adolescent development – future directions following Odgers & Jensen (2020)

Abstract: Odgers and Jensen’s (Annual research review: Adolescent mental health in the digital age: Facts, fears, and future directions, Wiley‐Blackwell, 2020) review compellingly suggests that a rapid increase in the number of hours adolescents now dedicate to digital media use over the past decade may not be associated with concomitant changes in the prevalence of adolescent mental health disorders. Yet, there are many unexplored questions that deserve attention to fully understand how adolescents’ use of digital medi… Show more

“…Firstly, key criteria for assessing digital media use outcomes, and, secondly, the role of individuals' own characteristics, as well as that of real-life and virtual-context influences, on individual differences in digital medial use will be examined in line with past literature (Odgers & Jensen, 2020;Orben 2020;Stiglic & Viner, 2019).…”

“…In other words, compared to adolescents' digital trace estimates, what are the mean differences in the time adolescents spend using social media measured through retrospective surveys, that is, time spent on social media in a typical week versus in the previous week (RQ1a) and measured through ESM Beyond investigating this between-person validity, it is also important to examine within-person validity. Several scholars have recently called for media effects research that disentangles withinperson and between-person associations (Orben, Dienlin, & Przybylski, 2019;Prinstein, Nesi, & Telzer, 2020;Whitlock & Masur, 2019). Between-person associations and within-person associations focus on different types of research questions and each provide unique insights on media effects (Coyne, Rogers, Zurcher, Stockdale, & Booth, 2020;.…”

“…The YPAG advising this study highlighted the need to focus on screen “use”, rather than screen “time”, and the blurring between the use of screens for educational and leisure purposes. The limitations of basing observations based on “time” rather than the activity or context in which screens are used has also been discussed elsewhere (Ellis, 2019; Odgers & Jensen, 2020; Prinstein et al, 2020). A review by Verduyn et al (2017) found “passive” and “active” usage of social network sites had different consequences for subjective wellbeing.…”

“…This has been criticised as a reductionist approach that does not consider type and context of screen use. There have also been calls for research to consider the potential benefits of screen use (Prinstein et al, 2020).…”
