Commentary: Reconsidering the Role of Context in Diabetes Prevention

Abstract: <p class="Pa7">A substantial gap remains between what we know about type 2 diabetes prevention and our ability to apply that knowledge in socially disadvantaged populations at highest risk. This gap results, in part, from a lack of integration between epidemiologic science and social psychology theory, particularly regarding the intersections of stress, self-regulatory health behaviors, and the biological mechanisms underlying the development of diabetes. In this commentary, we describe the utility of … Show more

“…In other words, it might also be possible that the association represents reverse causation between poor health and lower educational attainment and earnings . Additionally, higher income or higher socio‐economic status might reflect, at least to some extent, a healthier lifestyle in general. “…There is no single analysis that will ever test the "full" EA Model, just like there is no single analysis that can ever test the "full" fundamental cause framework, life course framework, stress-process model, etc. Rather, these theories, like the EA Model, inform the generation of research questions and the formation of testable hypotheses, determine choice of study design, inclusion/exclusion criteria, measurement strategies, and analytic tools, and guide the interpretation of results (Mezuk et al, 2017). Box (1979) said: "All models are wrong but some are useful" (Box, 1979).…”

“…Disparities do not emerge solely at the level of individual behaviors; rather, they originate at the intersection of environmental, psychosocial, and biological contexts [25][26][27]. However, few investigators have the skills needed to pose and test innovative hypotheses about this intersection, particularly among marginalized groups [17,28].…”
