Comments on diffraction principles and limitations of RCS reduction techniques

Abstract: Reduction of radar cross sections (RCS) is &ne of the major problems in stealth technology. Basic techniques used for RCS reduction are well known. They involve appropriate shaping, use of radar absorbing materials (RAM'S), and passive and active cancellation of the scattered jield. Detailed description of these techniques and related bibliography have been presented in RCS handbooks. In this paper we discuss these techniques briefly from the physical point of view and summarize their limitations. Attention is… Show more

“…These constructive attributes of the missile are displayed in the measurements and results in alterations in the pattern peaks. These results justify the complexity of the reduction of the target's RCS of complex geometry, as foreseen in literature (Ufimtsev, 1996).…”

“…In this scenario, cancellation echo cannot be generated by adaptive algorithms because the canceller is not included in radar. Thus, a more thorough knowledge of how the target scatters the electromagnetic field would be required [5,6]. Physical optics and equivalent current methods were presented to analyze scattering property in [7].…”

“…The target can be considered as a secondary antenna which has the silhouette of the target. The gain of this secondary antenna is directly related to the target FS Cross-Section (CS) and is independent from the target material [5]. Therefore, such systems are robust to stealth technology and benefit for target detection.…”
