Commercial Hemp Seed Oils: A Multimethodological Characterization

Abstract: Nine commercial hemp seed oils from different countries were studied using a multimethodological approach to obtain information about their quality and chemical composition. Due to the lack of a specific regulation for hemp seed oils, quality parameters used in the case of olive oils (free acidity, peroxides number, spectrophotometer parameters) and anisidine number were measured and compared with those reported for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Free acidity and peroxides number showed a great variability, ra… Show more

“…Before starting the accelerated oxidation test, the initial oxidative status and composition of the samples were evaluated (Table S3). The results obtained for PVs at time zero are in accordance with several authors in the literature for hemp seed oil [12,40,42,43]. Most of the samples showed similar values (9.43-12.62), with only sample type nine showing very low values (1.83).…”

“…The remaining fatty acids include linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3, n-3), oleic acid (OA, 18:1, n-9), palmitic acid (PA, 16:0), and γ-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3, n-6) [18]. It should be remembered that maintaining the appropriate ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 acids depends on a used method of oil extraction (cold pressing is recommended), the origin of the variety, and the type of seeds [20]. Hemp seed-derived proteins include albumin, globular protein, and estidine, the consumption of which has a beneficial effect on regulating human metabolism.…”

“…The health effects of consuming products containing hemp oil and seeds have not yet been fully established. The benefits reported so far include reductions in total cholesterol and blood pressure in those who consume these products [20]. A very important aspect concerning the use of cannabinoids is to enable the easiest possible application of these compounds to food.…”
