Commercializing bycatch can push a fishery beyond economic extinction

Abstract: Tropical bottom trawling is among the most destructive fishing practices, catching large quantities of bycatch, which are usually discarded. We used questionnaire surveys of trawl fishers to look at changes in catches over the last 30 years ) along India's Coromandel Coast. We show that catches and income from target species have declined sharply over the last two decades. Meanwhile, costs of fishing have increased substantially and now almost exceed income from target species. Over the same period, bycatch (w… Show more

“…3 Thus, the current situation has raised two major issues: first, an economic issue because the price of fish meal has tremendously increased over recent years and, second, an environmental issue due to overfishing risks associated with fish meal production. 4,5 To develop a more sustainable aquaculture, there is currently a trend toward the development of low FM−FO feeds for almost all species of farmed fish and shrimp. These feeds are based on plant ingredients and allow therefore a significant decrease in the use of fish meal.…”

“…Similarly, while Acadian redfish have been rebuilt and are currently locally abundant, this fishery has a history of collapse and life history characteristics that make it vulnerable to overfishing (Mayo 1998). Therefore, creating markets for species that are currently locally abundant creates a risk of contributing to future collapse (Lobo et al 2010). …”

Recent studies have documented that watersheds of terrestrial protected areas benefit adjacent aquatic ecosystems and fisheries (Abraham & Kelkar ), thus highlighting the need for evaluating protected areas as functional landscapes, in addition to their role in biodiversity protection.…”
