Commiphora myrrh Supplementation Protects and Cures Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Alterations of Gastric Ulceration in Rats

Abstract: Gastric ulceration is a multifactorial disease defined as a defect in the gastric wall that extends through the muscularis mucosae into the deeper layers of the wall. The most common cause of gastric ulceration is alcohol consumption. In the current study, rats were gavaged by ethanol to investigate the protective (before ethanol) and curative (after ethanol) ability of Commiphora myrrh (myrrh) oil and extract against gastric ulcer oxidative alterations induced by ethanol. Myrrh significantly improved ulcer in… Show more

“…Therefore, it can be a perfect antioxidant and ROS scavenger. Our findings are in agreement with other research that proved the cytoprotective effect of myrrh via free radical removal and stimulation of antioxidant activities in various organs, such as the heart and stomach (Abdel-Daim et al, 2015;Lebda et al, 2021). The high level of uric acid after cotreatment with AME in the current study could reflect its effective role in the attenuation of oxidative stress.…”

“…These health-enhancing pharmacological substances give myrrh several curative features, such as antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulant properties (Alqahtani et al, 2020). In addition, several studies on rats have revealed that myrrh could even promote the synthesis of cellular antioxidant potential, which results in a reduction in toxicity symptoms in some soft organs, such as the liver and stomach (Lebda et al, 2021;Alahmari et al, 2022). Myrrh appears to have significant economic and ecological value based on the above characteristics, and it may be able to be applied in the management of oxidative stress and inflammation-related conditions and toxicities.…”

“…Nizatidine is a histamine receptor antagonist that can be used in the treatment of allergic disease [20]. Nizatidine, tetradecanamine N,N-dimethyl, and N-methyl-N benzyltetradecanamine are bioactive compounds that are found in several medicinal plants, such as Citrullus colocynthis and Commiphora myrrh [21,22].…”

“…Among them, enzymes exist widely in eukaryotes and play an irreplaceable role in defending various tissues and organs against oxidative damage. For instance, GSH can scour free radicals and protect cell membrane and functional integrity; SOD protects the body by scavenging O2- and its level mainly reflects the body’s ability to scavenge oxygen free radicals; MDA mainly reflects the degree of lipid peroxidation in the body [ 42 , 43 , 44 ]. In this work, the activity of GSH and CAT notably down-regulated and the content of MDA clearly increased under cold exposure conditions.…”
