Common and plantar warts with trichilemmal keratinization‐like keratinizing process: a possible existence of pseudo‐trichilemmal keratinization

Abstract: Thirty-one common and five plantar warts were investigated histopathologically and electron microscopically in order to reveal whether or not these warts keratinize in a fashion similar or identical to trichilemmal keratinization (TK). Histopathologically, parts of 12 of 31 common, and 3 of 5 plantar warts, exhibited varying keratinization similarities to TK. The most similar case showed changes almost identical to intrinsic TK. Electron microscopy revealed uneven and somewhat interdigitating borders between t… Show more

“…Inflatncd foci of seborrheic keratoses and viral warts may show keratinization that is not of the normal (epidermoid) type, but which resembles trichilemmal keratinization, and should perhaps best be termed pseudo-trichilemmal keratinization (25,26).…”

“…Because large pale pink cells in CFV were situated more in the upper layer of the epidermis and CFV showed no endophytic proliferation, CFV seems to be different from verruca vulgaris with trichilemmal differentiation (trichilemmoma) described by Ackerman. Some CFV may be old verruca vulgaris lesions because koilocytes are rarely seen in older verruca vulgaris and the local areas of trichilemmal differentiation (pale eosinophilic cells with trichilemmal keratinization) in the epidermis and follicular infundibulum can be seen in old lesions …”

BRAF inhibitor-associated verruca keratosis is characterized by papillomatous growth with hyperkeratosis and parakeratosis, sometimes arranged in columns.…”

“…There is some papillomatosis, but this is particularly prominent in filiform variants (Fig. 513 A similar controversy surrounds the presence of squamous eddies in old warts, and the relationship of these lesions to inverted follicular keratosis (see p. 765). Columns of parakeratosis overlie the papillomatous projections.…”
