“…However, it also seems likely that various nonverbal messages and subtle verbal cues were exchanged between the partners at the onset of the interaction, the most obvious example being that the more dominant person usually took the seat toward the middle of the room and the less dominant person sat "with his back to the wall," and that these were the first of a series of messages which signaled who was going to do the majority of the talking and served to regulate the process throughout the interaction. Some of these kinds of regulatory patterns of behavior have been discussed by Scheflen (1963Scheflen ( , 1964 and by Duncan (1973).
