The Pneumatology of Brevard S. Childs

“…This is the problem Childs assigns to scholars such as David Kelsey and George Lindbeck; to side with these methods that privilege the descriptive task is to replace a Christological foundation with an eeclesial one-one that is no doubt available for examination, but one which assumes that practice "constitutes theological construction." 110 In a similar way, Childs would maintain that Walter Brueggemann misses the mark as well, but by positioning himself into a complex scenario where a "behind the text" reconstruction must occur. 111 Childs is certainly sympathetic to all of these Postcritical modes of reading, but would argue that a fundamental failure will necessarily occur if Sachkritic is not performed "out of the witness" of the Christological reality.…”
