Community-Academic Partnerships: A Systematic Review of the State of the Literature and Recommendations for Future Research

Abstract: Based on our systematic review, we recommend using a single term, community-academic partnership, as well as a conceptual definition to unite multiple research disciplines. In addition, CAP characteristics and methods should be reported more systematically to advance the field (eg, to develop CAP evaluation tools). We have identified the most common influences that facilitate and hinder CAPs, which in turn should guide their development and sustainment.

“…Using CBPR is suggested to ensure research question relevance (Halkoaho et al, 2016;Meza, Drahota, & Spurgeon, 2015), build respectful relationships between research and practice communities (Drahota et al, 2016), and aid with crosscultural research requirements such as language interpretation (Lee, Sulaiman-Hill, & Thompson, 2014) or culturally sensitive interpersonal communications (Spector, 2012).…”

“…The view from the scientific community appears to be trending toward greater inclusion or, at the least, recognizing the value of citizen involvement in science for decisionmaking (Drahota et al, 2016;General Services Administration, 2016). Over the past 30 years, there has been a steady rise in participatory research approaches across scientific disciplines, with the public engaged alongside scientific experts as coproducers of knowledge (Drahota et al, 2016).…”
