Abstract: Bacteriophages are the most abundant and diverse biological entities on Earth, yet the ecological mechanisms that sustain this extraordinary diversity remain unclear. Here, we have discovered a general mechanism that allows phage diversity to outstrip the diversity of their bacterial hosts.
