Community level evaluation of adenoid hypertrophy on the basis of symptom scoring and its X-ray correlation

Abstract: Introduction:One of the major causes of pediatric morbidity today at the community level is infection involving the ear, nose, and throat. Maximum of these patients respond well initially on general regular medications, but then recurrent complaints are not very uncommon. One of the major causes for such recurrence is hypertrophy of adenoids, the evaluation of which requires a battery of sophisticated investigative tools and expertise which are lacking at the community level. The aim of the study is to evaluat… Show more

“…It causes nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, restlessness and contamination of the ear and sinuses. In the absence of infection, adenoid tissue typically relapses over time 21 . It is widely accepted that adenoidectomy is the best treatment for adenoid hypertrophy, although complications such as haemorrhage, infections and palate dysfunction can occur following the procedure and the hazards of general anaesthesia 18 .…”

“…Chronic or recurrent infections are the two most common manifestations of pathologic and physiologic changes in the adenoids. If infection does not occur, adenoid tissue can regress in the process of time (22). It leads to symptoms including nasal obstruction, oral breathing, sleep disturbances, infections in the ear and sinuses, and reduced quality of life.…”

“…Among these, Choudhari and Shrivastav in a recent study, found the methods proposed by Holmberg and Linder-Aronson and Maw et al to have better diagnostic accuracy due to their high sensitivity and specificity [108]. Adenoidnasopharyngeal (A/N) ratio has also been used to assess adenoid size in several AH studies [23,53,[122][123][124][125], proposed earlier by Fujioka et al [126]. These studies used lateral X-rays/cephalograms and found a positive correlation between adenoid size and severity of AH symptoms.…”
