Community pharmacist participation in a practice-based research network: A report from the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana (Rx-SafeNet)

Abstract: In general, Rx-SafeNet site coordinators appeared to experience increased confidence in research engagement after joining the network. While respondents identified a number of benefits associated with network participation, concerns about potential time constraints remained a key barrier to participation. These findings will assist network leadership in identifying opportunities to positively increase member participation in the future.

“…Meetings enable professional networking, which is desired by PBRN participants, but which has been described as difficult to achieve. 21 Highly interactive meetings with fellow practitioners have been reported as effective means to translate scientific findings into clinical practice. Furthermore, practitioners have stated intentions to change practice behavior as a consequence of study results disseminated at meetings.…”

“…Time constraints are known to be a recurring barrier to many innovative initiatives and scope‐advancing practices in pharmacy, such as medication reconciliation, vaccination administration, sexual and reproductive health services, continuing education, inclusion in a research network, and general research efforts . Pharmacists expressed concern with the amount of time needed for proper patient education on naloxone, noting that appropriate education on overdose risk, responding to an overdose, and the proper use of naloxone could require a significant time commitment.…”

“…Despite PPBRs' importance in generating knowledge resulting in better outcomes for patients, health systems and society alike, common challenges persist. Notably, inadequate financial support stunts PPBR by reducing the time and resources needed by clinicians and researchers to participate in study activities [3,4]. Moreover, PPBR scientists often encounter primary data collection challenges due to unique data needs and data access/ownership issues.…”

“…Moreover, PPBR scientists often encounter primary data collection challenges due to unique data needs and data access/ownership issues. Other well documented barriers to PPBR include (but are not limited to) the wide geographic dispersion of study practices and collaborating researchers; a lack of trained, on-site research personnel; and the identification and enrollment of participants meeting study eligibility criteria [3,4]. To address these challenges, pharmacy researchers have begun to turn to technology-driven solutions.…”
