Comorbıdıtıes In Lung Cancer: Copd

Abstract

Patients who develop lung cancer often have one or more comorbidities that causes difficulties in considering treatment options. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, significant number of lung cancer patients with COPD are considered to be inoperable due to abnormalities in pulmonary functions. Surgical resection is the standart therapy in early stage lung cancer. Evaluation of the treatment options in operable lung cancer is a benefit analysis and may not be high as expected. Minimally invasive surgery or VATS should be strongly considered in both lobectomy and sublobar resections. COPD is a major predictive factor for postoperative complications and poor prognosis in stage I lung cancer after lobectomy. Patients should be evaluated in a multidiciplinary fashion. It is necessary to develop advanced techniques and technologies in order to achieve better results in this group of patients.
