Compact distributed fiber SPR sensor based on TDM and WDM technology

Abstract: By using a twin-core fiber (TCF), we propose and demonstrate a novel distributed SPR sensor, which employs both the time division multiplexing (TDM) technology and the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology together. The proposed sensor has two sensing passages with four sensing channels (and there are two sensing channels in each sensing passage). We employ the TDM technology to realize the two passage distributed sensing, which are parallel-connection; and we employ the WDM technology to realize t… Show more

“…[158] Multichannel SPR RI sensing also includes other implementation methods, such as combining the SPR effect with other sensing mechanisms or using TDM technology. [121,127,130,137,[159][160][161] In 2012, Zhou et al introduced the DRC effect to the fiber SPR sensor to add a sensing channel. Due to the utilization of PCF, the sensor possesses a special structure with multiple pores.…”

“…Accordingly, the sensor can measure the RI of liquids with four sensing channels, which is a new development of distributed fiber SPR sensors and is expected to be applied in multianalyte sensing, such as online monitoring of multiple biochemical markers in blood. [161] Detecting the change of liquid RI is the earliest application of fiber optic SPR sensors, and it is also the most typical application. [162] The implementation of fiber optic SPR RI sensing is the basis for the sensor to be further functionalized to be suitable for other parameters detection.…”

“…Since Jorgenson and Yee proposed fiber-optic SPR sensor decades ago, many new types of fiber-optic SPR sensor have been increasingly developed possessing the advantages of small size, allows for a smaller sample volume, easy to be integrated [ 2 , 3 ]. Typically, flat metal layers are used in bulk optical Kretschmann configuration where polarizing devices are used to provide TM-polarized incident light with respect to the incident plane without ambiguity.…”

“…Špačková et al [ 11 ] and Baiad et al [ 12 ] made use of optical grating to fabricate a multi-channel SPR sensor in a single fiber; however, a disadvantage of optical grating is its low sensitivity. Our team has fabricated a multi-channel fiber SPR sensor from a special single-mode fiber with a cone angle structure [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. The existing problems include difficulty injecting a wide-spectrum light source into a single-mode fiber having a small fiber core, the high risk of metal films on the small fiber core being damaged by the large power intensity of the propagating light, and difficulty in spreading its use due to the high cost of the special fiber.…”
