Compact nonlinear springs with user defined torque-deflection profiles for series elastic actuators

Abstract: Series elastic actuators often use linear metal springs in their drivetrains, which requires design compromises between torque resolution and actuation bandwidth. Nonlinear springs (NLSs), with variable stiffness, overcome this limitation, enabling both high torque resolution and high bandwidth. Current NLS designs combine variable cam structures with off-the-shelf linear springs, which increases the overall size of these torque transmitting elements. NLS size could be reduced by using other materials as an el… Show more

“…An example of these, are non-homogeneous coil springs, obtained by varying the pitch or the diameter along the axis. With the same objective an alternative solution would be to employ cams with variable-radius, e.g., [7,8]. In fact, the vast majority of the VSAs developed thus far are characterized by a one-DoF actuation scheme.…”

“…However, the human musculoskeletal system exhibit viscoelastic behaviors. Viscoelasticity have proven beneficial in these particular applications, in terms of energy consumption and compliance, motivating the implementation of viscoelastic (soft) materials in SEAs [4], [5], [6]. The mechanical behavior of a rigid element as a spring can be accurately described by known mathematical models.…”
