Compact Shape Morphing Tensegrity Robots Capable of Locomotion

Abstract: Robustness, compactness, and portability of tensegrity robots make them suitable candidates for locomotion on unknown terrains. Despite these advantages, challenges remain relating to ease of fabrication, shape morphing (packing-unpacking), and locomotion capabilities. The paper introduces a design methodology for fabricating tensegrity robots of varying morphologies with modular components. The design methodology utilizes perforated links, coplanar (2D) alignment of components and individual cable tensioning … Show more

“…Related is also the work of Connelly et al who studied how the angle of external members of an internal soft structure could be used to control its shape, but again due to the braid we do not the need the internal soft structure [7]. Braided robots are similar to tensegrity robots [13], [14]. Tensegrity robots also promote the idea of low weight and high strength as features that are important.…”

“…However, there are also studies utilizing broad tensegrity for this type of tensegrity robot. The utilization of bent bars instead of struts to improve the shape and deformation during movement is one of the approaches utilizing broad tensegrity (Rhodes et al, 2019;Schorr et al, 2021a). In this case, the bent bar bears the bending stress, which is not entirely the strict tensegrity, but the bent bar can be regarded as a straight strut; hence, it approximately follows the definition of strict tensegrity.…”
