Abstract-Synchronization performance of a pulse-based ultrawideband (UWB) system is investigated by taking into account of distortions caused by transmitter and receiver antennas and wireless propagation channels in different environments. The synchronization scheme under consideration can be achieved in two steps: a slide correlator and a phase-locked loop (PLL)-like fine tuning loop. Effects of the non-idealities are evaluated by analyzing the distortion of the received UWB pulse and subsequently the synchronization performance of the pulse-based UWB system. It is found that generally a smaller step is required for the sliding correlator due to distortions introduced by the antennas and channels. However, the fine tuning loop can always be stabilized by adjusting the loop parameters. Therefore, synchronization can always be achieved.

Abstract-In this paper we develop an empirical approach to the design of Ultra Wideband (UWB) antennas employing the Inverse Parabolic Step Sequence (IPSS). The relationships developed can be used to miniaturize the antenna and achieve a good impedance match over the UWB bandwidth. The overall aim of this process is to give a good starting point for detailed numerical optimizations. We will illustrate the use of these formulae in three different designs of IPSSbased antennas. A low loss duroid substrate of loss tangent, tan δ, 0.0009, low relative permittivity 2.2 and thickness 1.575 mm is used to simulate these planar monopole antennas in Ansoft High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS).

Abstract-A low-profile unidirectional cavity-backed coplanar waveguide-fed uniplanar log-periodic slot antenna suitable for the ultra-wideband applications (3-18 GHz) is presented. Due to the inherent balanced structure compared with the unbalanced antennas, such as dipole or loop antenna, the impedance matching and radiation performances of the proposed antenna are quite stable and satisfactory. There is a potential advantage for low profile ultra-wideband unidirectional antennas, and this paper demonstrates a technique for transforming the bidirectional beam into a unidirectional beam by using a special cavity in this ultra-wideband antenna. Meanwhile, the multi-resolution time domain (MRTD) method is applied to analyze this antenna. Experimental results reveal that the cavity has a small affect on the S-parameter of the origin antenna, and remains the perfect reflection property within the desired operation band.
