Compaction and Collapse Characteristics of Dune Sand Stabilized with Lime-Silica Fume Mix

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the suitability of dune sands as construction materials, moreover, such a purpose is considered beneficial in assessing appropriate methods for soil stabilization or ground improvement and to assess the suitability of dune sands as subgrade layer for carrying roads and rail foundation. Dune sand samples were collected from a region in Baiji area in Salah-Aldeen governorate, North of Iraq. A grey-colored densified silica fume (SF) and lime (L) are used. Three percentage… Show more

“…The results of the CBR test are presented in Figure 12, where the measurement curves are marked with the blue line and the violet one presents graphs of corrected values. Similar curve shape (of uncorrected CBR values) was presented in many papers (Bednarek & Mazurek, 2011;Khillare et al, 2016;Fattah et al, 2016;Hossain et al, 2016;Zhemchuzhnikov et al, 2016). “…Then according to mentioned Standards, the soil samples were subjected to the one point CBR test with 4.5 kg surcharge weight. The results of previously conducted studies are presented in paper (Chmielewski & Waliszewski, 2016), as well as the results of researches of other authors (Bednarek & Mazurek, 2011;Khillare, Damgir, & Hake, 2016;Fattah, Joni, & Al-Dulaimy, 2016;Hossain, Islam, & Rakib, 2016;Thakur & Yadav, 2018) show that obtained penetration curves diverge from the standard curve locally. The results of these studies indicate that mentioned deviations occur most frequently for indentation close to reference penetration values which are 2.5 and 5.0 mm.…”

“…Materials 2021, 14, x FOR PEER REVIEW 3 of 22 using different stabilizers. [24][25][26]. In addition, the locally available pozzolan called volcanic ash is also available in large quantities in the western part of the country as natural materials.…”

“…The locally available due sand is an attractive material to be used for the construction of roads and foundations. However, due to the low bearing capacity of these soil, it is necessary to improve their properties by using different stabilizers [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. In addition, the locally available pozzolan called volcanic ash is also available in large quantities in the western part of the country as natural materials.…”

“…The variation in shear strength parameters became almost constant after fourteen days of curing. Fattah et al (2016) concluded that the treatment with Lime-Silica Fume Mix shows a general increase in the maximum dry density. Wayal et al (2012) investigate the use of bentonite and lime in stabilizing dune sands for possible uses in geotechnical engineering.…”
