Comparable outcomes in studio vs. traditional delivery of an introductory soil science course

Abstract: Studio‐style course delivery involves the integration of laboratory activities with lecture elements of the course, with the goal of increasing student learning and satisfaction through directly linking laboratory and lecture concepts while focusing on active learning. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of studio delivery of an introductory soil science class at California Polytechnic State University, we first redesigned the course to integrate appropriate technology and to align lectures with laboratory … Show more

“…The situation is worse in subjects like soil science, especially pedology, where the hands‐on field experience is very important to the learning process (Aleman et al., 2021). In this sense, virtual pedagogical activities like the soil judging e‐contest are quite important to attract students to active learning practice, which could support better engagement and outcomes (Rees & Winberry, 2020). For examples, the different components used in both the experiences were efficient to promote engagement as mentioned by the Brazilian and the American students.…”

“…In some cases, traditional lecture has been found to be less engaging, which in the long-term may lead more students to lose interest in the subject (Bradbury, 2016). Although many instructors primarily rely on lectures for teaching soil science, research suggests that more active learning strategies could help instructors inspire and engage with the current generation of students (McShannon et al, 2006;National Research Council, 2009;Amador, 2019;Rees & Winberry, 2020).…”
