“…If an animal’s growth is significantly affected by adverse conditions, then its welfare could deteriorate significantly [ 40 ]. Previous studies have shown that the factors affecting the growth of rare minnows include nutrients [ 41 , 42 ], water temperature [ 43 ] and other physical and chemical characteristics of their water environment, feeding, and other culturing strategies [ 43 , 44 , 45 ]. Therefore, these impact factors are restricted or controlled in the standard drafts of rare minnows to ensure their basic welfare.…”

“…This suggests that accumulation of Cd in the gonads of rare minnow causes no-spawning activities. The fullness of yolk granules is a prerequisite for oocyte maturation, which determines the spawning cycle of the parent fish species to some extent (Su et al, 2020). The histological data showed that Cd exposure resulted in absorbed yolk granules in the present study, which may explain why most of the spawning events in the Cd exposure group occurred in 6-10 days or over 10 days.…”

“…The parent fish were removed to a new tank to ensure separation from the eggs. Based on the results of Su et al (2020), resuming spawning rhythm was defined as a second consecutive inter-spawning interval within 5 days. The next day, the eggs were siphoned into 600 mL cylindrical glass containers [12 cm (diameter); Huaou Industry, Yancheng, China] for collection and parental fish were returned to the original tank for further observation.…”

“…These standards for conventional (CV) and SPF rare minnow consist of ve parts, including microbiological standards and monitoring, parasitological standards, genetic quality control, nutrition and food, and water environment and facilities standards. Preliminary reports have con rmed that these standards are rigorous, and declared them to be the local standard in Hubei Province for establishing and cultivating SPF rare minnows (Su et al 2020). Research on the species' hematology and serum biochemistry is limited to the CV individuals reported by Shao et al (2006), and these parameters of SPF rare minnow have not yet been reported.…”
