Comparative Analysis of Critical Headway Estimation at Urban Single-Lane Roundabouts

Abstract: According to models commonly used in practice, the capacity of roundabouts largely depends on the value of critical headway. The value of critical headway depends on the characteristics of vehicles, driving conditions, and geometric characteristics of intersections, but also on driver behaviour. Driver behaviour is the result of many factors that depend on the influence of the local environment, driver habits, mentality, etc. Accordingly, to calculate the capacity of roundabouts within the op-erational and pla… Show more

“…This can lead to underestimation or overestimation of road capacity, which in turn can affect road safety and efficiency. D. Radovic et al (40) , in turn, estimated the critical interval for single-lane roundabouts using five methods: Logit, Harders, Ruff, maximum likelihood and Wu's method. To determine which of these methods provides the most realistic estimate of the critical interval, the field values of the capacity were compared with theoretical capacity values.…”

“…P is the probability of gap acceptance, β 0 and β 1 are regression coefficients and x is the length of the gap. Authors in [69] described the application of this model for five singlelane four-leg mini-roundabouts. The required geometric and traffic parameters of the roundabouts have been obtained using the so-called photographic method, which employs videos.…”
