Comparative Analysis of Redox Homeostasis Biomarkers in Patients with Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis

Aleksandra Klisic,
Mirjana Bakic,
Vesna Karanikolic

Abstract: There are no studies regarding comparative analysis of serum biomarkers of oxidative stress in patients with psoriasis (PsO) and atopic dermatitis (AD). We aimed to compare the serum redox homeostasis parameters in patients with PsO vs. AD in an attempt to find the sensitive and specific oxidative stress biomarker that could best reflect the existence of one of these disease entities. Methods: Forty patients with PsO and forty patients with AD were consecutively included in this cross-sectional study. Paramete… Show more

“…Another clinical relevance of these results is potential use in diagnosis given that we also indicated a lower ability of the antioxidant defense system. Other authors also showed lower values of CAT and SOD in psoriatic patients compared to the other forms of inflammatory skin diseases [ 51 ].…”

“…Results of this study indicate a more pronounced improvement of redox status in patients treated with biologics compared to MTX. Due to reduced antioxidative capacity in patients treated with MTX, shown by us and others [ 51 ], it would be of interest to consider antioxidants as supportive therapy. The aim of the application of antioxidants, either as adjuvants or maintenance therapy, should be directed towards the increase in endogenous antioxidative capacity, especially in MTX-treated patients.…”

“…Hence, there is a crucial need to advocate for healthy lifestyle choices and prioritize patient education initiatives among individuals with psoriasis. Recent findings indicate the significance of incorporating antioxidant-rich foods into psoriatic patients’ diet and considering antioxidants as a potential therapeutic approach for managing inflammatory skin conditions [ 51 ]. Oxidative stress is believed to be a crucial factor in the inflammatory cascade of the pathological mechanism of psoriasis.…”

“…Moreover, there is sufficient evidence substantiating the advantageous effect of flavonoids in the management of psoriasis. Currently, the use of prescription medications, following a healthy lifestyle, and consuming a diet rich in antioxidants have the potential to reduce the damaging effects of oxidative stress caused by psoriasis, especially on the skin [ 184 ]. The overproliferation of keratinocytes and chronic inflammation in psoriasis are associated with increased concentrations of TNF and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).…”
