Comparative Analysis of the Mechanical Behaviour of PEF and PET Uniaxial Stretching Based on the Time/Temperature Superposition Principle

Abstract: Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate), PEF and poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, are two polyesters with close chemical structures. It leads to similar thermal, mechanical and barrier properties. In order to optimize their stretching, a strategy based on the time/temperature principle is used. The building of master curves, in the linear visco-elastic domain, allows the identification of the experimental conditions for which the two materials are in the same physical state. The initial physical state of the m… Show more

“…The SIC formation behaviour of PEF has received attention in the last decade in the scientific literature. Not only the crystalline structure of SIC [ 129 , 130 , 131 , 137 ], but also the formation of SIC and the influence of stretching conditions, differ from that of PET [ 132 , 138 , 139 , 140 ]. This difference is mainly attributed to the lower entanglement density of PEF [ 128 ], meaning that PEF needs to be stretched more before a similar amount of orientation is built up.…”

“…As it can be seen, the as-received PHV appeared amorphous. However, the annealed, at multiple temperatures, as well as the strain-induced sample exhibited the same XRD pattern as the initial material, without a signal of strain hardening as in the case of PEF and PET. In contrast with PHV, its homologues poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT) and poly(hexamethylene 2,5-furan dicarboxylate) (PHF) are semicrystalline materials with fast crystallization rates. Furthermore, in contrast with PHT and PHF, PHV has a methoxy substituent on its repeating unit and an ether bond in place of the −COO which seem to negatively affect chain folding of the otherwise flexible methylene sequence. Methoxy group substituents also affect the conformational regularity and chain packing ability of poly(ethylene syringate) …”

“…Accordingly, it is essential to optimize main process conditions in the roll-to-roll manufacturing system. However, excessive deformation may occur in the material due to changes in the elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion that are caused when the web is heated to a high temperature in the drying section [ 49 , 50 ].…”
