Comparative anatomical study of the leg's nerves of Cebus (barbed capuchins) with baboons, chimpanzees and modern humans

Abstract: Pesq. Vet. Bras. 32(Supl. The anatomical comparative studies among the primates are important for the investigation of ethology, evolution, taxonomy, and comprehension of tools by hominoids. Especially the anatomical knowledge of Cebus contributes to conservation of the species, and to development of surgical procedures and clinical treatments of these animals, as they frequently are victims of automobile accidents. Recent anatomical studies came to a wrong conclusion regarding behavioral traits of Cebus, ascr… Show more

“…Few descriptions are related to the nervous system of the hind limbs [14, 15]. It is not surprising that the anatomical descriptions available of the lower limbs that support the data about its bipedalism focusing mainly on muscles and bones, although these structures are supplied by the arterial system.…”

“…There are numerous studies about Sapajus behavior, cognition, and bipedalism [ 1 5 ], but the anatomical descriptions of these species are scarce in scientific literature and the majority of those works concentrate on thoracic limbs [ 6 – 13 ]. “…Studies on the anatomy of nerves are important for the treatment of animals that need to undergo clinical and surgical procedures 10 and for comparative studies among primates, especially when they are carried out with New World primates whose evolutionary taxonomic studies are incipient 5 …”

“…As Sapajus is increasingly present in urban areas, they are more prone to accidents. 10 Thus, anatomic data of these primates may also be useful in their therapeutic, clinical and surgical handling in research laboratories 31 and veterinary clinics. 10 On the other hand, comparative anatomical studies among primates are important for ethology, for evolutionary taxonomic research and for the understanding of the use of tools by hominids.…”
