Comparative Assessment of the Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities of Plicosepalus acacia and Plicosepalus curviflorus: Metabolomic Profiling and In Silico Studies

Abstract: This study presents a comparison between two mistletoe plants—P. acacia and P. curviflorus—regarding their total phenolic contents and antioxidant and anticancer activities. P. curviflorus exhibited a higher total phenolics content (340.62 ± 19.46 mg GAE/g extract), and demonstrated higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 48.28 ± 3.41µg/mL), stronger reducing power (1.43 ± 0.54 mMol Fe+2/g) for ferric ions, and a greater total antioxidant capacity (41.89 ± 3.15 mg GAE/g) compared to P. acacia. The… Show more

“…Previous studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between oxidative stress and the evolution of diseases such as inflammatory pathologies. However, antioxidants are able to reduce this stress, leading to disease prevention [ 44 ]. Due to the different complexities in the contents of natural compounds and different reactive oxygen species, several methods are used to assess the antioxidant activities of plant extracts [ 45 ].…”

“…So, many scientific papers were oriented to illustrate how these plants undergo their pharmacological effects. Previous studies involved green medicine as a crude extract of the whole plant [ 3 , 4 ], an extract of certain parts [ 5 , 6 ], purified natural compounds [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], or isolated certain bioactive fractions such as polyphenols, essential oils, saponins, alkaloids, polysaccharides, etc. [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…The extract’s total antioxidant capacities (TAC) were defined spectrophotometrically using phosphomolybdenum assay. The method was done as previously declared ( Prieto et al, 1999 ; Eltamany et al, 2022 ). The absorbance was measured at 695 nm, and the effect was expressed as mg equivalents of gallic per g of extract (mg GAE/g).…”
