Comparative assessment of the challenges faced by the solar energy industry in Ethiopia before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic

Abstract: The COVID‐19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact on social, economic, and political situations of all countries around the world with no sight to its end. Business sectors such as solar distributors, which have been instrumental in supporting the governments' ambitious universal electrification programs, have been negatively affected by the pandemic. The main aim of this paper is therefore to explore and conduct a comparative assessment before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic of the key challenges of so… Show more

“…The renewable energy sector has experienced a contraction due to production challenges and export woes. Such as Gebreslassie ( 2022 ) said, COVID-19 brought significant challenges to solar energy development in Ethiopia, because the pandemic reduced the income of solar technology end-users; several enterprises were forced to close. A shortage of technology supply has hampered the development of renewable energy.…”

“…Other issues like uncertainties in the supply chain, higher taxes for goods, and the increasing difficulties in accessing governmental benefits and lower interest rate incentives [174], resulted in an electricity generation capacity growth lower than forecast globally for wind (i.e., decreased by 4.9 GW) and solar energy (i.e., by nearly 28%) [175]. In Denmark, where the pandemic seriously affected renewable-based generation, governmental actions are demanded to save the goal of 50 % of renewables in the energy mix by 2030, and total independence from fossil fuels by 2050 [176]. The pandemic resulted in a critical situation for the Ethiopian solar energy industry, which is a cornerstone in the government approach to achieve universal access to electricity [177].…”

“…Moreover, the smart grid successful deployment will necessitate many highly skilled engineers and managers on transmission and distribution networks. The importance of training workshop for update specialized skills and promote an employee to acceptance of new technology will be greater than ever before (Gebreslassie, 2021). The smart grid will improve the features and functionality of the current grid machinery using smart metering devices for better communications.…”
