“…However, different plant species can place emphasis on different mechanisms for the production of active oxygen species in response to elicitation (Bolwell et al, 1998;Papadakis and Roubelakis-Angelakis, 1999). Our results indicate that increases in either GSH or salicylic acid are insufficient for the propagation of an oxidative burst in grapevine callus cultures.…”

“…Similarly low concentrations (0.1-10 m) of DPI effectively inhibit the elicited formation of H 2 O 2 from membrane-bound plant NADH-oxidases (Levine et al, 1994). Substantially higher concentrations (50-240 m) of DPI are required to inhibit H 2 O 2 production from NADH oxidase-peroxidase (Bolwell et al, 1998;Frahry and Schopfer, 1998), which can be important for the development of the oxidative burst in some plant species (Bolwell et al, 1995). The sensitivity of grapevine callus to DPI therefore suggests that the elicited deposition of GvP1 is driven by an oxidative burst from membrane-bound NADH oxidase.…”

“…The GSH functions as an important antioxidant in both enzymatic and nonenzymatic ROS scavenging reactions (Foyer and Halliwell, 1976;Noctor and Foyer, 1998), and both Cys and N-aC are commonly used as antioxidants to scavenge ROS and protect against oxidative damage (Bolwell et al, 1998). In support of the importance of these thiols in such protective mechanisms, several transgenic plants with elevated levels of GSH have been shown to be particularly resistant to oxidative stress (Foyer et al, 1995;Wellburn et al, 1998).…”

“…27,28 We have recently proposed a likely role for free Fe 2C in reduction of ferric HRP into ferrous intermediate and Compound III which may further produces O 2 ¡ , especially under alkaline condition possibly contributing to the plant defense mechanism. 18 The present work confirmed the similar behavior of SBP in response to Fe 2C under alkaline condition.…”
